Seasons in Xirokambi

Spring season

  • Flowers – from February till June flowers colour ancient sites, olive groves, fields and mountain slopes
  • Great skies
  • Apokries – Greek Carnival
  • Clean Monday – Start of Lent celibrated with special dishes, the first picnic and flying kites
  • Greek-orthodox Easter (main religious festival)
  • 25 March – Independence Day, celebrated with a parade around the village square of Xirokambi
  • May 1 – Labour Day, celebrated with music, dance and food
  • The most perfect time of the year for photography

Summer

  • Summer Festival of Xirokambi
  • Open air cinema in Sparta
  • Outdoor wining and dining
  • Music and other performances in the open-air theaters of Xirokambi and Sparta

  • Flowers: oleander, hollyhocks, roses

Autumn

  • Great skies
  • Start of the olive harvest (beginning of November)
  • Turning foliage (starting in November)
  • Flowers: cyclamen, crocus
  • 28 October – Ohi-day, national holiday in remembrance of the refusal of the Greek government to the ‘request’ by Italy to occupy Greek soil (WWII)
  • Last weekend of October: Chestnut festival of Arna

  • Alcyone days – 10 days around Christmas with perfect & quiet weather; named after the kingfisher bird who lays her eggs in this time of the year
