Xirokambi is located 15 km south of Sparta, off the main road (E 65) to Gythio, and 215 kilometres from Athens.
Travel to Xirokambi by car
Take the national road from Athens or towards Corinth, and then continue along the motorway to Tripoli. You will come across several toll posts; you can pay with cash, bank or credit cards. From Tripoli you can take the old road through the mountains (Sparta no tolls). Or continue on the highway (toll) all the way to Sparta. The first route is 23 km shorter, but more difficult to drive in rain or in the dark. Both routes are scenic.
In Sparta, follow the road signs towards Gythio for another 12 kilometres. Take a right turn towards the signposted road to Xirokambi (ΞΗΡΟΚΑΜΠΙ).
If you arrive via Kalamata Airport, take the highway to Sparta and from there continue as described above.
Travel by public transport
There is a frequent bus connection from Athens to Sparta (3 – 3½ hours), departing from the bus terminal at Kifisou Street, in Athens. The bus service is operated by the bus company of Lakonia (KTEL Lakonia), telephone +30 27310-26441.
Tickets can be bought online or at the ticket booth of the Lakonia bus company in the main ticket hall at the Kifisou bus station. The Lakonia ticket booth is located at your right hand corner and has the main towns on its routes written both in English and in Greek: SPARTI**** – ΣΠΑΡΤΗ, MONEMVASIA – ΜΟΝΕΜΒΑΣΙΑ. The price of a single ticket is €19,50. On your ticket you will find a seat number. Tickets will be both in English and in Greek.
The bus to Sparti leaves from platform 21-22. Buses may continue further south towards other destinations such as Neapoli, Gythio or Monemvasia. In this case this name will be shown on the bus, not Sparti. Do not hesitate to ask. If they do not understand you, they’ll find you somebody who will. Suitcases will be placed in the luggage compartments. Loading of the bus starts 5-10 minutes before the bus leaves. On route the bus stops for about 10 minutes at the bus station of Corinth (Korinthos) or Tripoli.
From Sparta to Xirokambi
There are several buses a day from Sparta to Xirokambi (at 9.30, 11.30, 12.30 and 14.15). From Xirokambi you can take the bus to Sparta at 10.00, 12.00 and 15.00). We advise you to check the time table at the bus station or ask locally). For about 20 euro a taxi will bring you in 20 minutes to the place you are headed in Xirokambi. You can also arrange with your local host that they have a taxi waiting for you at the bus station upon arrival.
